A Yorkshire pub may have won the top spot in this year’s Top 50 Gastropubs 2017 but the small market town of Clitheroe steals the gastronomic hotspot with its cluster of winning inns.
THE Star Inn at Harome in Yorkshire was voted the Number one gastro pub by trade magazine, The Morning Advertiser, in its annual Top 50 Gastropubs 2017.
The inn has crept steadily up the list over the past three years, coming in third and fifth place in 2016 and 2015 respectively.
It’s chef of 20 years, Andrew Pern, is something of a local celebrity. He has remained dedicated to using the finest ingredients to produce ‘playful but refined cooking.’
His best-known dish, which he describes as the epitome of his “rich man, poor man” style, is seared foie gras teamed with rich black pudding, doused in a sticky scrumpy cider reduction.
However, the Lancashire market town of Clitheroe – just 34 miles north-west of Manchester, complete with its small Norman castle, thriving cement, asphalt and animal feed works, has been elevated to gastronomic hotpot.
With its population of just 15,000, Clitheroe has five winning inns – 10% of Britain’s top foodie pubs, all capitalising on the plethora of local produce around the Ribble valley.
A 15 minute drive from Clitheroe, The Parkers Arms is this year’s highest climber moving up the list from 48th to 13th.
It just shows that the gastropub phenomenon is no longer just London-centric
