IT’S not all big, bold, and oaky reds coming out of Spain anymore. Whilst the classics from Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Rioja are still significant and hold their place, Spanish wine is changing.

The Wines from Spain annual tasting, for the first time, is coming to Manchester on 28 April 2025.

Fresh from its debut in London on 1st April, Wines from Spain is bringing more than 167 wines from 118 producers and 39 DO Spanish regions to the annual tasting to take place at Fountain House.

Trade visitors are invited to a full day of tasting including walk-abouts, guided tastings and a self-pour showcasing the 17 Grand Gold winners from the 2025 Wines from Spain Awards.

There will be 54 new wines for 2025 on display. A selection of no/low-alcohol, low sulphur wines, biodynamic, low intervention wines on offer along with lighter and eco-friendly bottles as winemakers are eager to show their sustainability credentials.

The Fountain House, Manchester – 28th April 2025:

  • 10.30am – 4.30pm: Walk-Around Tasting Flights
Tasting highlights with local wine expert Jane Clare.
  • 11.30am and 12pm: Guided Tasting – Cava de Guarda Superior, with Sarah Jane Evans MW
  • 2.30pm – 3pm: Guided Tasting – Campo de Borja, with Sarah Jane Evans MW

Key Trends:

Local wine journalist and wine educator Jane Clare DipWSET, founder of One Foot in the Grapes will be on hand to offer guided walk-abouts focusing on a range of topics, including interesting varietals, climate influence, or quirky offerings.

This is an opportunity for a wine buyer, retailer, or sommelier, to discover new and exciting wines and emerging regions when looking to freshen up their Spanish wine range.

Spain has its big names and rich traditional styles for reds, albeit with an ongoing trend towards less oak, more refined styles and chillable, lighter reds.

White wines are also on trend due to the revival of exciting local grape varieties, evolution in winemaking and, of course, changing consumer habits.

Albariño from Rías Baixas and Verdejos from Rueda are clean, fresh, and drinkable. Try aged white Riojas, creamy Godellos and fresh Garnacha Blanca. There is a Spanish white for everyone!

Spain is also out to highlight its sparkling brilliance with D.O Cava and, D.O. Penedès classics alongside exciting Pet Nats and other sparklers from Rías Baixas and Andalucia.

For a snapshot of what’s hot right now, a ready-made list of Spain’s top wines, selected by international judges at the inaugural global Wines from Spain Awards, will also be on show at a self-pour tasting table.

Taste the only 17 wines to receive the top accolade of Grand Gold in the Wines of Spain Awards. 450 wines were tasted blind in December 2024 and the top 100 wines were presented for final selection to a master jury.

Masterclasses:

  • Spanish wine expert Sarah Jane Evans MW, who is releasing her book, ‘The Wines of Central and Southern Spain,’ this summer, will hold two masterclasses focusing on D.O. Campo de Borja old-vine Garnacha and Cava de Guarda Superior as categories to watch.

11.30am-12pm Cava de Guarda Superior, presented by Sarah Jane Evans MW

Cava is ‘like a wine with terroir character.’ Sarah Jane Evans MW will be showing a lively range of Cavas within the premium category that includes Cavas Reserva, Gran Reserva and Cavas de Paraje Calificado. Cava has had some bad press, but Cava Superior is different. Everything above the ‘basic 9- months-aged Cava, is now organically certified.

2.30pm-3pm Campo de Borja, presented by Sarah Jane Evans MW

Campo de Borja is well known for its excellent Garnacha wines, the standout varietal for the region. This tasting will focus on current trends and the Historical Garnachas Project, an initiative to study and protect an important historical heritage while promoting the special wines produced from old vine Garnacha.

Wine Walks:

Throughout the day, Jane Clare will lead a series of 20-minute wine walks around the tasting, each with its own theme, including Quirkies, Interesting Varietals and Sparkling (it’s not just about Cava!). The walks will give visitors a chance to focus in on a topic and discover 4-5 highlights.

Sign-up to the tasting and get ready to explore!

The tasting’s interactive digital tool provides visitors with a paperless way of preparing their visit. They can filter through options such as winery, region, variety, no/low or natural wines and bookmark the wines they wish to taste. They can create their own downloadable catalogue which they can bring in print or digital format.

The tasting takes place on 28th April 2025 at The Fountain House from 10.30am until 4.30pm. A light lunch will be served between 1pm and 2pm.
